Video & description by Malcolm Rutherford — In May 2012 we travelled on the 99 year old M.V Liemba from Mpulungu Zambia, to Kigoma Tanzania. It was a brilliant trip. This is some of the footage I took during the journey. We arrived a day late with 470 passengers on board. It should be noted that all the shots of
various parts of the ship were taken before
almost every surface was covered in people, goods, chickens, etc. First class (2 bunk cabin) is $100 USD per person, while second class (4 bunk cabin) is $90 USD. Third class (deck space) is $70. Based on the number of other people on board, and the number of cockroaches in second class I would recommend paying the extra and going first class (Only a few cockroaches). One area not shown in the video are the "first class" toilets, which were memorable to say the least. I shudder a little at the memory of them,
We were travelling from Lusaka to Kampala - the alternatives were to go back through Dar es Salam, and then through Nairobi, Or, train to Mwanza where there might be a ferry to (near) masaka, Or the road which parralells the lake - which sounds like a bit of a nightmare. The boat is brilliant and if you have the chance I recommend it.
